A severe diesel shortage grips West Virginia with four truck stops running dry or nearly dry. At Stop 77 in Fairplain near Ripley manager Robert Yates says trucks are stranded and fuel supplies vanished, threatening bankruptcy as drivers fear weather and frozen roads.
United Mine Workers Welfare and Retirement Fund adopts a program allowing permanently disabled miners to keep their UMW medical care card for life and extends the same to widows of miners killed in the mines unless she remarries. The trustees describe it as limited but addressing pressing medical needs in the coal fields.
President Nixon pressed his Watergate counterattack in public and private, drawing cheers at a Realtors convention while Republicans said he claimed former Attorney General Richardson lied in sworn testimony about Richardson’s role in ousting special prosecutor Archibald Cox. White House sources denied the liar accusation. Richardson defended his testimony. Senators quoted Nixon but would not identify themselves. Haig disputed Richardson’s testimony on limiting Cox’s probe and whether to seek perjury action. Nixon pledged to stay in office as the debate continued.
The House voted 391 to 20 to approve a two stage eleven percent Social Security boost for 30 million recipients starting April with seven percent and July with four percent increases. Cost-of-living raises would follow every June. The tax base would rise from 10800 to 13200 making the maximum annual levy rise from 631 to 772 for both workers and employers. The average old age benefit would rise to 178 in April and 186 in July for singles, with couples at 296 in April and 310 in July.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies and cooler conditions with a chance of showers today. Highs will be in the mid 50s and nighttime lows in the 20s. Details on Page 8A.
Union Carbide announced a multimillion dollar growth plan for urethane polyol facilities at its South Charleston plant and a similar project at the Institute plant. The South Charleston expansion adds 150 million pounds of annual polyol capacity by next June to meet rising demand for furniture cushioning and other foam products. Engineering will be handled by Carbide staff in South Charleston. employment impact is expected to be minimal. The project sits on Blaine Island and will span about a city block.
Rep. Ken Hechler recalls three secret cash offers from defense-industry lobbyists, each envelope of cash rejected with registered mail. He decries the cash handoffs as widespread, says campaign finance is overfunded, and cites differing 1972 primary tallies for Hechler Kee and Wells alongside Joe Neal’s $36,000 1972 outlay.
