In Charleston municipal court Friday Judge John Charnock dismissed two felony charges linked to a city fire captain and a West Side businessman after failure to prosecute. Fire Captain William Morse and James Bonham faced counts including felonious shooting and carrying a dangerous weapon. Civil suits in Kanawha County Common Pleas are pending.
The Charleston Urban Renewal Authority filed its Part II Government Square URA project with HUD for review. Director Eric Hemphill said approval will lead to a signed contract and execution stage before year end. The project costs $11.4 million with the city share $1.9 million, largely offset by a $1.5 million parking garage.
Analysis shows about 72 million ballots were cast in the 1968 presidential election, roughly 60 percent of the voting age population, the smallest turnout since 1956. If as many as a million ballots remain, the turnout would reach about 64.8 percent, far below 1964 and 1960 levels.
River boat E'Deanaj Bosworth sustained damages pegged at $25,000 after an early Wednesday blaze. A week long community health drive in Kanawha County provides Dreypak diabetes test strips at no charge through local drugstores. Mrs. Alan Arthur, chairwoman, explains envelopes include return addresses for respondents. The effort aims to aid diabetes prevention and control during the campaign.
Charleston Housing Authority Director S Clyde Jarrett injured in an auto crash while en route to a St Albans Housing Authority meeting. Police report he left U S 60 at Spruce Street when his car was struck by a car traveling east. Damage estimated at 850 dollars.
MOUNDSVILLE—James Allen Effner 20 and James Lambert 21 fled the West Virginia Penitentiary Friday afternoon by stealing a car from a prison garage where they worked. Effner, from Wetzel County, had a 1 to 10 year sentence for breaking and entering. Lambert, from Raleigh County, had 1 to 10 years for receiving stolen goods. The stolen car was recovered four hours later on a hill about 1.5 miles from the prison.
A federal grant of 32731 dollars was awarded to the Braxton County Redevelopment Authority to finance the planning of regional recreation facilities. The study is part of a total project cost of 981503 dollars, announced Friday by Senator Jennings Randolph Senator Robert Byrd and Representative John M. Slack.
