The Astrodome crowd, one of the largest arenas for campaign events, filled the huge covered arena with about 58,000 people for a speech. An official described it as possibly the largest crowd ever to hear a candidate in this campaign.
Holden police say Emmett Gilliam 79 was shot twice in the back and once in the leg during a late Saturday confrontation at Acie and Hilda Nelson’s residence. Hilda Nelson 52 is arrested on a murder charge. Gilliam was a retired miner and St. Paul Baptist Church member. Survivors include son George Lee Gilliam, sister Lillie Penn, and brother William Gilliam. Body at Logan Funeral Home.
