Records show a 1964 contract for prison cell work in Moundsville totaling 140000 dollars with 168 doors. Investigators say most doors were in bad shape and would not close properly, and the state may have used prison labor due to funding shortages.
Mercer County Intermediate Court Judge Howard Jarrett sentenced Nathaniel B. Johnson 21 to one year at the State Forestry Camp Davis in Tucker County for conspiracy in the Nov 21 1968 bombing of the Bluefield State College physical education building. Johnson of Crumpler McDowell County pleaded guilty and had his 110 year prison term suspended in favor of the forestry camp. Johnson was among six young Negroes charged. William C Travis was found guilty and freed on appeal while Shannon Banks was found innocent.
The Most Rev. James P. Shannon auxiliary bishop of the St. Paul Minneapolis archdiocese denied resigning his post on Wednesday. He indicated a disagreement with the Roman Catholic church on birth control and did not confirm a resignation. The Minneapolis Star reported he allegedly resigned after writing to the Pope about the encyclical.
Arthur Banks, former assistant state road commissioner, was dismissed from his post as road commissioner engineer. He filed a letter seeking a hearing before the State Civil Service Commission. Banks served as assistant road commissioner from 1953 to 1955 and said he had worked for the commission for 19 years.
West Virginia University outlined the second annual Appalachian Regional School for Church Leaders to be held July 7 18 offering intensive instruction in preaching rapid reading technology and human values Appalachian culture science and moral decision. Dr B B Maurer coordinator said the program is among the top clergy continuing education efforts by land grant universities and noted last year’s attendees included 40 West Virginia leaders and 77 participants from 10 other Appalachian states funded by federal sources.
Mrs Faulkner recounted failing attempts to lose weight while her Air Force husband served. After doctors diagnosed a thyroid issue and congestive heart failure she followed a low carbohydrate plan, shedding 1180 pounds in ten months. Her daughters Sharon and Pam support her goal of 140 pounds as her husband returns home for her 32nd birthday.
Arab gunners from Jordan fire rockets into Jericho for a second straight day. Israeli forces respond along the cease fire line with air and heavy artillery. A house is destroyed by a direct hit and several buildings damaged. one Arab is wounded. Huntington area receives 670 acres of land from the West Virginia Department of Mental Health for camping and recreation. The land south of Barboursville could be leased to a community group to develop a camp for hospital rehabilitation, for retarded children, and for general public use.
Police clashed with rioting students in Bogota and four provincial capitals over Nelson A. Rockefeller's visit. At least 50 injured, including policemen, with a seriously wounded child from a pistol fire incident. Students blocked streets at the National University and damaged storefronts in Medellin Barranquilla Cali Pereira.
In New Haven Yale officials clarified that 12 students sent unauthorized admission letters cannot be enrolled. Eight other students had been accepted earlier, with dispute over admissions in the City Planning Department. Nine of the 12 recipients are Black, and President Brewster advised the eight admitted students not to enroll.
The Charleston Fire Department logged runs including a cigarette in a waste paper basket at Greenbrier and Virginia streets, a fire at 1808 Washington St. E with no damage, and a bus incident on Dunbar Road.

A Woodrow Yokum versus the U S Government appeal is set for June 10 after Yokum was convicted in Elkins West Virginia federal court last year for unlawful sale and transport of stolen government property. Also on appeal is former West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Commissioner Clarence C Elmore for 1963 income tax evasion after a 13 day Bluefield trial.
U.S. Representative John Dent cited Britain's program of periodic chest X rays for coal miners as a model for detecting and monitoring black lung early. He plans to include X ray provisions in mine health legislation, with five year exams for unaffected miners and annual checks for those with signs. Dent seeks dust standards near 4.5 mg per cubic meter, and may separate compensation bills.
Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and his girlfriend Marianne Faithful were arrested at their Chelsea home on marijuana possession charges. It marks Jagger’s second drug case after a prior appeal of a pep pill sentence, and they were released on $120 bail each.
