Japan and China clash. Canton bombing spurs casualties

Chinese forces claim recapture of Lanfeng and surrounding areas as they press a counter offensive against Japanese positions. In Canton a mass air raid by Japanese planes results in at least 800 dead and 1,000 wounded, followed by heavy damage to Wongsha area and a hospital. Rescue teams suffer major losses as streets burn and thousands flee.

Auto Plate Rush On for 1938 39 Licenses

The rush for 1938-39 automobile license tags is on as 20 000 to 25 000 tag sets have already been mailed. The motor vehicle registrar said the department will ship most tags the same day applications are received and the first shipment was sent Wednesday. Tags may be used starting June 20 with no extension beyond July 1 for 1937-38 plates.

Excursion Boats Collide in Fog Sinking Mandalay

In New York harbor a collision between the Mandalay excursion boat and the luxury liner Acadia in dense fog sank the Mandalay during its first trip of the season.
