Dr Charles H Mayo founder of the Mayo Clinic died of pneumonia at Mercy hospital Chicago at 4 55 pm CST. The 73 year old Rochester Minnesota surgeon had been ill eight days with pneumonia and was surrounded by family as five physicians tried to save him. He helped build the renowned Mayo Clinic and leaves behind a vast medical legacy.
Woburn Massachusetts mayor William E. Kane ended his own pay amid an economy drive. He had cut street lights on moonlit nights and removed beds from fire houses while refusing to sign payrolls for police and firefighters, including himself, due to concerns payroll ordinances may be illegal for not being published three times as required.
West Virginia’s pre marital blood test law took effect yesterday with no marriage licenses issued in Kanawha County. Eighteen couples moved the deadline from Tuesday to Thursday. Applicants must show a physician’s certificate proving a standard syphilis test was completed and that the person is not infected or not in a contagious stage.
London reports indicate Britain France and Soviet Russia edging toward a mutual assistance pact within a week to ten days. Soviet envoy Voroshilov may visit to observe British maneuvers as talks proceed and both sides consider reciprocal military close cooperation.
Washington May 26 The War Department quietly reviews evidence linking retired Maj. Gen. George Van Horn Moseley to anti Semitic activity while denying an independent inquiry. The probe, if any, follows a committee witness claim and seized letters. A routine check could affect Moseley’s retired pay under articles of war.
Tom Pendergast will report at 2 p.m. Monday to the U.S. marshal's office to be taken to Leavenworth penitentiary for a 15 month term for income tax evasion. He pleaded guilty to evading taxes on 443,500 in 1935 and 1936, was fined 10,000 and ordered to pay the delinquent taxes with penalty and interest.
Two Norfolk and Western train crew members were killed when an eastbound freight wrecked at Pembroke Virginia near Bluefield. Engineer E. M. Pile of East Radford and fireman J. K. Stophel of Roanoke died. A brakeman escaped with minor injuries as 30 cars derailed and blocked both tracks.
The nation spends a billion dollars yearly on national defense, said Asst. War Sec. Louis A. Johnson, calling defense a positive economic asset. He told the West Virginia Bankers association that armed strength ensures respect for a nation and protects shores. Madrid reports that Nationalist councils of war and military tribunals have sent 688 people to firing squads since Madrid fell on March 28. Officials say 1,000 were condemned, 312 commuted to prison, with daily trials totaling hundreds in Madrid and surrounding zones for crimes during Republican control.
Navy divers cleared decks of the USS Squalus and prepared salvage plans after two submarine experts flew to Washington to obtain approval. Officials said the disaster cause would be known only after dry dock examination. Divers already worked four hours, with bodies of 26 entombed until the vessel is raised.
Washington May 26 1940. Michigan Republicans formally launched a Draft Vandenberg movement to nominate Sen. Arthur H Vandenberg for president. Gov L D Dickinson and 12 Michigan GOP lawmakers led the drive praising his national leadership and Senate record. The push followed quiet Dewey opposition efforts within the state.
Kay, chairman of the Republican state executive committee, pledged an economy platform and predicted a 1940 GOP victory. Speaking to a Wood County rally in Parkersburg, he said residents have a right to expect reductions in expenses and taxes and vowed to cut governmental expenditures if given office.
Washington May 26 The Townsend old age pension bill moved toward an almost certain House defeat next week. The rules committee approved quick voting with floor restrictions and Democratic leaders planned a Wednesday introduction and Thursday ballot. Rep Boland cited an 87 percent Democratic opposition from a six week survey. A Republican leader warned too many Republicans would vote for it.
State troopers report the polygraph paid for itself in a month. Sergt. C. R. Cobb said the device helped recover stolen property and clear up several tough cases with no prior leads. A soundproof room is being built to improve operation.
May 26 ARTHURDALE AP Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt spoke to a high school graduation class saying the nation could address unemployment by expanding the army and staffing munitions plants if needed, without advocating the move. She urged students to connect national problems with global issues and noted the crowd of Homesteaders.
Entries for The Gazette fifth annual snapshot contest are due at noon today at 22 Hale Street editorial offices. Local awards total 12 dollars with class winners advancing to compete for 60 dollars in grand prizes and 10,000 dollars in national awards.
Fritz Kuhn leader of the German American Bund is charged with grand larceny and forgery. He was released from Tombs prison after a $5,000 bail was paid by his lawyer with an unknown woman present outside in a car. Kuhn pleaded not guilty in court while prosecutors described embezzlement of more than $14,500 from bond groups and theft of Mrs. Florence Camp’s belongings.
Portsmouth Navy officials identified Chief Boatswain's Mate M C Sibitzky as the diver who first contacted the 33 men trapped in the submarine Squalus. He remained at the bottom 240 feet for 1 hour 14 minutes to attach the downhaul wire and enable the rescue chamber deployment.
