Welch May 24. McDowell County is again without a prosecutor after L Herndon resigned as prosecuting attorney. Herndon had taken the post temporarily on April 15 to fill a vacancy created by G L Counts becoming judge of the McDowell County Criminal Court. Counts appointed, advised a successor to be found after June.
Two tankers collided 13 miles south of Barnegat light ship in fog. W. W. Bruce sank in bow, crew of 36 worked pumps, British tanker Scottish Maiden damaged but floating. Bruce proceeded to New York under its own power, Scottish Maiden to Newport News for repairs. Coast guard tracked progress, radio communications were disrupted then restored.
Lord Davidson former Archbishop of Canterbury and primate of England died in London at 1 06 this morning at age 62. He resigned the throne in 1928 after Parliament rejected the revised Anglican prayer book. His retirement followed a church split between modernist and traditional factions.
American Gold Star mothers and wives toured French cemeteries near Paris in cold rain. They visited Fere en Tardenois and other sites, laid wreaths, and planned visits to Rheims and the armistice car site at Compiegne. Mother's Day observances include ceremonies, processions, and flower distribution.
Pittsburgh police arrest G C Birk after he admits his tale of a missing wife was false. He claimed a Niagara Falls resident aided his flight from Erie Pennsylvania without paying rent, and he staged the disappearance during a widespread search by city, county and state authorities along the Lincoln highway.
Percy Tetlow of Charleston, president of District 17 United Mine Workers, is reportedly under consideration by President Hoover for Secretary of Labor. Tetlow may replace Jamoa J. Davin as resignations flow from his U S Senate bid.
President Hoover and party visited a mountain camp near Culpeper Virginia amid rain and cold. Seventeen guests including Senator Hatfield joined the excursion and some joined in fishing before retreating to the camp for a log fire. Hoover considered a trip to the mountain children’s school but made no decision.
May 24 HINTON Officers were elected to lead the West Virginia Bankers Association meeting. J R Johnson Renverarte was named chairman and F G Boott Ronesterts secretary treasurer. D Drumhelter Charleston became president and M Evans Cincinnati joined as officers and delegates from Pocahontas Greenbrier Monroe and Summers counties.
J Sterling Morer, supervisor of the census for the District of Columbia, announced that 670 people in the national capital were unemployed but able to work and seeking employment as of May 24.
