The Senate Armed Services Committee endorsed a one year training plan for 18 year olds and a two year military draft for 19 to 25. The panel rejected a racial segregation amendment 7 to 4. A separate defense bill seeks to expand the Air Force to 70 groups with about 3.2 billion for air power and aircraft numbers projected at 20,599 planes. The President is expected to sign despite opposition to air expansion, while Truman favors draft and universal military training.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Vandenberg today released an administration draft resolution that would grant Congress approval for U S military guarantees to Western Europe. The measure aims to extend the Monroe Doctrine to Europe and supports association with regional self defense arrangements under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Washington May 11 The nation’s 200 000 mile rail network operated on schedule under government seizure and Army control after a federal injunction halted a planned strike. Seven railroad presidents were summoned to duty while union leaders warned wage demands and stricter working conditions remain unresolved.
Detroit May 11 A strike of 75 000 workers at Chrysler Corp. set for 9 a m. EST tomorrow appeared certain as federal conciliators failed to avert it. Negotiations with the CIO United Auto Workers were broken off and no meeting was planned before the strike deadline. Chrysler spokesmen said they remained willing to discuss a settlement.
Kane county sheriff D Earl Brawley sparked a chaotic polling place incident at Precinct 75. A disputed move from Mrs Ava Baria's Chandler Drive home to Parsons school led to fights, a smashed window, injuries, and disputed damages while election officials and a deputy clashed with Sheriff Brawley and W L Hilliard.
John E. Amos leads incumbent Charles C. Morris for the Democratic nomination in the 8th district with 6178 votes to Morris 4362 as 111 of Kanawha county's 284 precincts report. Homer W. Bowers Jr. is unopposed for the Republican nomination in the same district. Returns from 98 Kanawha precincts show leaders among eight Democratic House of Delegates nominees.
In a Democratic sheriff race Kanawha County Loury leads Carson Richards early after 38 of 284 precincts. Mack Mathews runs ahead for the Republican nomination with 3,466 votes amid a field including Griffith Melton and Harrison. Other results show John M. Slack Jr. leading for county commissioner and James Lakin ahead of Carper in the GOP contest.
