Kanawha county board of education completed employment for 1,206 principals and teachers for the next school term. Contracts and health certificates will be required, with vacancies to be reviewed later. List of Senior High Principals and staff follows, naming numerous teachers and administrators.
Dawson proposes a temporary plan to alleviate Charleston congestion while awaiting a permanent program. Focuses on creating and pricing parking lots to regulate private car use in the business district. A citywide survey will guide the eventual permanent system and pricing.
Washington May 11 coal operators from nine states join federal regulatory legislation efforts saying the industry faces imminent bankruptcy. They urge a national conference of bituminous coal producers to meet May 20 to discuss solutions. They oppose an extension of the NRA as causing more confusion. The group highlights big producers led by J D A Morrow of Pittsburgh Coal Co and Charles.
About 1 050 seniors in Kanawha county will graduate from Benton high schools and junior high schools with a total of 3 050 graduates. Commencement programs run May 30 to May 31 with speakers including Elizabeth J. Goodall, Dr. Br. O. Dwich, McDaniel, and Virgil Malden. A car crashed into Suburban City Hall early morning causing partial collapse of the two story brick and steel building. Injured: L Hogsett with a fractured skull in critical condition. a resident woman suffered a facial cut. Driver F A Halstead knocked unconscious, arrested for reckless driving, later released. Damages estimated at 1500. The vehicle owner, Anainte Fulks, says the structure is under repair plans by Thomas Fitzgerald and contractors Trojan company Smith and Bailes E P Murphy. Charlotte May 11 Judge W P Harding set aside a $125000 jury verdict in a personal damages suit brought by a former son in law against a millionaire Joseph F Cannon and ordered a new trial. He did not question the jury's honesty but ruled the award excessive and said compromise is unlikely. The retrial date is undetermined.
Editor notes Mother's Day observed today stems from 1906 activism by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia. Her mother Mrs Anna Jarvis inspired the movement through charity, church work, and open homes for distressed families, with carnations as the symbol and visits or letters seen as ideal gifts.
Fayelle county prepares a self supporting tent town to house up to 400 World War veterans. Veterans will build homes from on site materials and later engage in industry to support families and buy tax lots. A large hardwood plant head in Washington backs the project and the American Legion may sponsor it.
Omaha the Derby winner repeats at the Preakness, winning by six lengths as Firethorn and Psychic Bid finish behind. Jockey Smiling Wille Saunders, age 20, guides the great chestnut to a fast 1 58 2 5, with Gallant Fox as the sire’s famed lineage noted.
Washington May 11 federal relief officials promised an investigation into charges of mis management inefficiency and nepotism in West Virginia relief administration. West Virginia delegate J Guhl Shahan urged removal of ex state administrator Bechler and a full clean up. He cited padded payrolls and aid going to a clique while unemployed faced neglect. Randolph county cited as example of alleged mis management.
FAIRMONT May 1 Three miners are missing and ten in hospitals after a coal mine fire at Harrachayille four miles from here. The mine employs 200 men and may be shut for days. Officials report the blaze under control early today. the cause is unknown. A few men remained unaccounted for as timbers fell during the escape.
Miss Blanche Gibson of Fairmont Wow elected president of the West Virginia division of the American Association of University Women at the division business meeting yesterday afternoon at the W C A receding a dinner at the Daniel Joane hotel last night which closed the group's thirteenth annual convention. Miss Gibson succeeds Mrs A T Brogonier of Huntington as president. Others officers to serve in 1935 36 are Miss Marie Bish of Clarksburg first vice president, Mrs R E Shute of Charleston secretary and vice president, Miss Ethel Lee of Fairmont secretary, Mrs Matt Ruarke Nobles of Parkersburg treasurer, and Miss Sara Smith of Parkersburg historian. Education Discussed Adult education as the keynote of the A A U W now set forth by Dr Kathryn McHale general director in her address just after noon. She stressed the importance of a million dollar foundation which has been established and which will eventually provide fellowships for twenty five women to study at graduate schools or work independently on original contributions to abstract knowledge. President Roosevelt creates a rural electrification administration under the work relief program to oversee generation transmission and distribution of electric energy in rural areas. The scope appears vast with money limits cited and concerns raising whether existing plants and lines may be purchased or condemned. Officials note REA will follow standard approval steps and reports to the president.
Kanawha County sees a new oil surge as seven wells are drilled with two more planned. Since 1912 fourteen wells have entered the uncharted Oriskany sand, notably by United Fuel Gas and Paul Grasscup of Charleston. About 225000 dollars is spent on the current phase after Grasscup struck a 200000 foot gas well yielding 165 barrels of oil in 18 minutes last fall. The best find so far is a 2000000 foot well by Godfrey L Cabot on Campico creek, with the sand described as fine white quartzitic grains whose exact relation to the Oriskany is still debated by geologists.
Hawaii reports a mass aerial attack plan involving 400 plus enemy planes in mid Pacific maneuvers. Washington cites 480 aircraft in other operations while officials hide deployment and dates as naval circles stay silent on enlarging maneuvers near Pearl Harbor.
Washington May 11 The Patman currency bill faces a weekend surge of advocacy with Huey Long and Fr Charles E Coughlin rallying support while Sen Borah pushes for cheap abundant money. President Roosevelt travels fishing with aides as telegrams flood the White House urging action. Cleveland May 11 A county treasurer deputy Joseph Krizek says he has worn a flower in his lapel every day for 25 years to honor his mother born in Bohemia. He recalls wiring her from Venice for her birthday and promises to switch to white if she dies.
