West Virginia lawmakers ended an all night session by approving a biennial budget of 80,593,857 for the next two years. The legislature rejected beer regulation and adjourned at 6:15 a.m. amid tense negotiations.
The 1943 session focused on tax cuts and veto overrides with six measures repassed despite Gov Neelyn's opposition. Notable actions include income tax repeal, restricting recess appointees, and utility tax procedures. The session passed about one sixth of the 600 plus bills and set new assessment timelines and a 10 percent gross sales reduction.
Six senators met with President Roosevelt to outline a plan for wartime cooperation and peacetime aims. They endorsed organizing the United Nations, mobilizing military and economic resources, aiding Axis-ruled areas, and establishing a UN military force to deter future aggression.
