Judge Joseph Thomas condemned the Clark murder probe as stinking and pledged to boost efforts if elected mayor. He noted a $15,000 reward offered by the Charleston Daily Mail is to be withdrawn May 2 when the new mayor takes office. The paper backs incumbent John T. Copenhaver. Juliet Staunton Clark, owner, was murdered Aug. 22, 1953. The reward had been raised to $15,000, then canceled for May 2. The GOP primary also decides police judge, city treasurer, and 23 council seats.
D. Boone Dawson who served as mayor of Charleston yesterday announced support for Judge Joseph, joined by Roy H. Fierson of the Kanawha County Republican Executive Committee. The pair dismissed rumors of political deals with National Committeeman Walter Hallanan and Democratic Boss James Hanna, noting no motive indicated by the Gazette report.
Sen Knowland urges 7th Fleet action to stop the Aruba carrying 13 000 tons of jet fuel from Red Romania to Red China. Sen George of Georgia rejects blockade and warns against naval interference. Sen McClellan calls the voyage a failure of government policy and vows an inquiry.
In Nagpur India Prime Minister Nehru faced a rickshaw boy wielding a small knife who leaped on his running board but caused no injuries. Nehru, 65, pushed away the assailant and police contained the matter. Basu Rao 32 from Maharashtra identified as the attacker. another man was arrested. Nehru called the weapon very small and said the episode had no significance.
In Fairview New Jersey on March 12 a 40 gallon drum of high explosive chemicals exploded injuring two other boys. Neal Alexander 11 was killed when a lighted match triggered the blast. His brother Ronnie 8 died seven hours later. Two playmates remained in critical condition.
The West Virginia Legislature adjourned after approving taxes to balance the next fiscal year's budget. A $4 million revenue gain and a SRC funding boost were approved, with a pending final decision on the budget Monday. A hoped pay raise for teachers failed 22-10 amid a last minute clash over sales tax and state aid cuts.
The acts sent to the governor include allowing judges to hear probation violation cases during court vacations and abolishing the Colored Deaf and Blind School at Institute to integrate with white schools at Romney. Also requires presidential ticket names before absentee ballots, sets limits for education board payments, bans out of state fiduciaries, and notes non residents at death may name beneficiaries.
Nine members of Governor Marland's official family were rejected in a party line Senate vote. Top officials targeted included Luther H. Carson Purchasing Director Jeter R. Aliff Parole Board Chair Dana C. Eakle and Mines Chief Frank B. King. Others rejected were James M. Donohoe of Huntington Glinta Jorapice Edwards Huntington and C F Hopsen Charleston. Two commissioners also voted down were J Stanley Turk Wheeling and C A Rubencutter St Marys. The action ended a failed coalition effort by Hanna Democrats and Hallowian Republicans to block confirmations.
Thelmer W. Herndon, 54, of Tad, says he acted in self defense after shooting two brothers at Herndon's Place near Meadow Brook Golf Course. John F. Legg, 19, died from a gunshot wound, while his brother Glyde Legg, 35, survived with injuries. Herndon is jailed without bond, claiming he grabbed a pistol when the men refused to leave after an argument over beers escalated into a bar scuffle.
