Det Lt L B Warren said Holbrook was arrested after Virgil Lee King a former city police officer was beaten to death outside the Victory Bar on Washington Street. King died en route to Charleston General Hospital from a basal skull fracture. Five men remain in custody on murder charges for the March 3 beating of William Earl Browning. Witnesses said King and Holbrook argued in the Victory Bar around 11:55 p m Thursday and fought on the sidewalk outside. Holbrook claims King struck him first and that he struck back multiple times. Bar proprietor George Gruibch said he separated them and ordered them outside. Patrolman Dunn, a new officer, helped lead the initial investigation and was praised by Lt Warren.
