City extension plan dies as chamber refuses passage

At a luncheon meeting the chamber of commerce regulatory committee declined to pass on the city extension proposition to extend the tax base, sending it back to the board with no recommendation. The group endorsed a constitutional amendment on property taxation reclassification, with support from State Senator Clyde Johnson and L. J. Ata. The annexation measure involving South Charleston and Kanawha City was earlier referred by the Chamber, with local real estate boards backing alignment with the Kanawha County delegation. The tax bill, backed by Joseph S. Hill, aims for broad changes to taxation laws and equitable assessments, including a rule that money, notes and bonds face up to 40 cents per $100 valuation, with real and personal property taxed in proportion to value.
