National Guardsmen evacuated 100 families from low lying Logan areas as rains battered Southern West Virginia. Rivers rose with wave conditions forecast for Tuesday. Eighty guardsmen were on duty at the Logan Armory aided by amphibious trucks expected from Pt. Pleasant. Tug Fork and Big Sandy waters rose, with crest forecasts of 36 to 57 feet. Roads and streets in Logan and nearby towns blocked by slides and flooding.
In Washington Sen. Barkley proposed a staged $20 per person income tax cut, $10 in 1956, $15 in 1957, and $20 in 1958, with committee action delayed to hear a witness. In Moscow Bruno Pontecorvo admitted living in the Soviet Union after disappearing in Britain, declaring gratitude to the Soviet people and government.
The House Finance Committee advances a provision to require legislative appropriation of revenue from revolving funds, except bond retirement, with funds spent only as the budget directs. A West Virginia Senate panel plans to abolish the beer enforcement office and its 21 agents. The attorney general would oversee enforcement with a new assistant and investigative staff. Senate Finance Chairman Glenn Jackson estimates annual savings near 100000.
About 170 international Teamsters Local drivers walked out after midnight in Charleston, idling Skyline and Town Tops cabs. A last-ditch bargaining session failed to reach a contract agreement, with the union seeking higher wages and administrative changes. Non union drivers may operate, but violence fears linger as the Red Star Taxi remains the only active company.
A three year old girl, Jewell Fay Barker, and a four year old boy, Mikael Eugene Rose, died in separate accidents yesterday near Sylvester Boone County. Barker was struck by a car while her mother watched nearby. Rose died after a moving scow truck loss of control plunged over an embankment and hit a tree near Sutton General Hospital.
