West Virginia Community Canning Centers Bustling in Busy December Months

Vocational agriculture officials note December is busiest for school community canning centers across West Virginia. Centers handle canning of fruits vegetables and meats with facilities for butchering and live-animal processing, aided by federal funding and supervision by local boards of education. In Moorefield last year 4600 hogs and 36 cattle were butchered, with Weston processing 100 beeves, and total outputs reaching about 1.066 million pints. Centers have expanded to Wayne Lookout Talcott and others, aiming to double past year totals again this season as operations run through February or March.
