West Virginia coal shifts lift strip mines in race for efficiency
The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce says the coal industry suffers from thinner veins and older drift and shaft mines facing mechanized strip mines in Illinois Indiana and Pennsylvania. It cites per worker tonnage gaps but notes overall 1944 May production rose 7.8 percent with total output around 14.79 million tons. Other May gains include energy up 148 percent, building permits up 49.5 percent, and May retail sales up 13.7 percent from 1943.
