Sacred Heart Church in Charleston Roots and Growth Since 1846
Sacred Heart traces Charleston Catholic roots to 1846 when Father Thomas Farrell began caring for Catholics across Nicholas Braxton Fayette and Kanawha counties under Richmond diocese. It recalls Father Joseph W Stenger’s 1862 ordination and 1866 Charleston settlement, a 1869 first church on Dunbar Quarrier Broad Streets, 1870s expansion, Capuchin Franciscan charge in 1902, and a stone Broad Street church opened after 1897. By 1900 Stenger’s death closed a chapter, while daughter parishes formed in Kanawha City West Charleston St Albans Dunbar and Belle as Sacred Heart remained a two thousand strong parish amid Charleston’s business district.
