Youngstown and East Chicago mills face reopenings amid a 83 day C I O strike led by John L. Lewis. Pickets tighten around Inland Steel and Youngstown Sheet and Tube as governors urge restraint, while talks with independent producers hinge on bargaining contracts.
The state liquor stores list 48 of 334 whiskey and gin items boosted on July 1 with new brands and prices released by the liquor control commission. Some whiskies fell, wines and champagnes saw a 10 percent cut, and chair R E Kelly cited federal aging rules and higher distilling and labor costs as factors behind the rise.

ROCHESTHE Minn June 23 Hayard T Warton of Mayo clinic warned swimmers who are hypersensitive to cold. He described a condition he said can cause fainting and advised bathers not to plunge into cold water. Dr Merton explained that swimming in cold water may trigger fainting in these individuals.
Youngstown June 24 Philip Murray national chairman of the Steel Workers Organizing committee rushed to the strike area to head off a growing back to work movement. He cited that more than 15 000 had returned to their jobs under Ohio national guard protection and said the battle is not over yet while urging his forces to stem the tide in the mills. He sent a telegram to Gov. Davey accusing state troops officers of colluding with steel executives to reopen plants in Cleveland Massillon and Canton. Officials said mills were operating full capacity on one9 two 12 hour shifts while 60 percent of Sheet and Tube workers had returned to work and Republic expected peak production soon.
Grace Vance a 19 year old LSU co ed beauty testified at a preliminary hearing that her father Claude Vance killed Night Marshal Hartington in a pistol duel. The druggist defendant appeared on a first degree murder charge as the hearing nears its end with final arguments pending.
Robert Irwin a 29 year old sculptor and divinity student faces murder charges in New York for the Easter Sunday killings of Veronica Gedeon her mother and a lodger. Dist. Atty. William Dodge plans to seek three indictments and an insanity defense is anticipated. Chief witness will be Ethel Rudner sister of the slain Veronica. Irwin’s confessions describe entering the apartment to kill and purify himself.
Austrian Alpine ambulance corps reveals plans to establish remote blood stations in mountain villages supplying a synthetic blood substitute for climbers. The haemarrhesin product, developed by Dr Friedrich Gaudenker, is described as a reliable life saving option after severe blood loss though not a full replacement for blood cells or proteins.
A grim weekend left 12 dead across the state including six drownings and three gas-blast deaths at northern mines. Other fatalities came from a self-inflicted act, a fall, a distant cliff collapse, and a carbon monoxide incident endured by rescue workers.

Glenville, June 28. Two new gas wells were completed in the fast growing Glenville field. The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Gas company reported a 4,500,000 cubic foot producer on the S. A. Hayes farm. Hayes, a former informal revenue collector for West Virginia, is near the Little Kanawha River. The Carnegie Natural Gas Company, a United States Steel subsidiary, announced a 125,000 cubic foot well drilled within half a mile of the same area. Both wells were completed within close proximity on the river bank.
The Kanawha county board of education approved a special levy to raise 260 000 annually for three years to boost teachers salaries and issue 84 year bonds for new schools. The plan includes a trade school and 297 450 for construction and repairs for Negro pupils across various districts with bonds bearing up to 3 percent interest and a 2 to 54 year maturity.
The American First Glass Workers Union of North America opened its first national convention in Marion Indiana today. National president M J Gilonley of Toledo Ohio spoke at the session. The meeting will close on Thursday July 6.
