Seabees of Bikini Island Face Long Deployments and New Tests
Seabees of the 58th battalion on Bikini Island endure extended duty as atomic tests shift dates. Comdr John D. Burky and Lt. Comdr Gilbert Prothero describe morale as steady while enthusiasm for nuclear testing wanes. They have built camera towers, magazines, and anchorages, cleared coral with dynamite, and prepared for a 1947 deep water test phase as delays stretch plans.
