Dear Miss Dix Advice on a mother’s veto in engagement
A reader asks whether to wait or end her engagement to a man deterred by his mother’s threat to marry only if she lives. The columnist condemns the mother’s control as cruel and urges breaking with the man if he won’t defy her, warning of lifelong subordination in such a marriage. Also notes two Charleston servicemen, Pvt Freddie G. Hutton and Pvt Harold R. Null, with brief family hometowns and bases.
