House Panel Okays Funds For Defense
The House Appropriations Committee endorsed a 58.6 billion dollar down payment to run the Defense Department and finance the Vietnam War for the upcoming fiscal year. The panel warned that at high combat levels the amount may be insufficient and stressed it should not predict war end. The bill, 6.9 million above Johnson’s request and about 12 billion more than the earlier defense measure, drew a Republican critique urging an independent civilian military commission to review defense policy.

Bailey Backs By Drink Liquor Tax Plan in West Virginia
The Associated Press reports that Secretary of State Robert Bailey proposed a state 5 cent pour tax on liquor by the drink and a license requirement for establishments selling by the drink, arguing it could raise 3 to 6 million dollars annually. Attorney General Robertson called the proposal a touchy issue but Bailey says private clubs may legally sell liquor, and that many communities already do. Meanwhile, bid bidding news notes Fairmont firm disqualified for lacking stock ownership details and notary blanks, with Biggs Johnston Withrow winning the award. Gov. Smith’s brother Joe L. Smith Jr. runs that firm, though the governor says he divested interests in 1961.
