Objectors Serve As Guinea Pigs In Medical Test
Washington June 25 1944 Conscientious objectors volunteered to be infected with influenza or the new virus pneumonia to aid army research. Of 122 volunteers 94 fell ill but all recovered in studies supervised by the army surgeon general and civilian scientists. The work showed virus pneumonia can be transmitted by nose washings, justifying further study to isolate the infective agent.
