Scout Rescues Girls From East River Swim

A Queens Boy Scout risked his life by jumping into the East River to save two girls ages 5 and 15. Henry Plimack and two city natralmen aided in the rescue as Linda Lauria and Rose Hetzel were pulled to safety and treated at Lincoln Hospital in fair condition. The Hetzel girl had been accompanying younger children to a San Juan Festival at Randall's Island Stadium when the incident occurred.

Fort Sill short shell kills four GIs during live-fire drill

Captain Robert E. Kren said spectators were uninjured. The dead include Set. Alonzo Cart ridge. An Army board led by Col. O L Tobiason will investigate. A short round mortar shell fell among Company B troops near Adams Hill on the east artillery range. Approximately 175 soldiers took part in the ground assault with multiple artillery battalions providing support. Helicopters rushed the wounded to the base hospital. two seriously wounded were to be flown to Brooke Army Medical Center for surgery.
