A 1955 state law limiting firefighters to 60 hours per week will cut Charleston firemen’s pay by about 50 dollars monthly if 18 new positions cannot be funded. Mayor Copenhaver proposed switching to hourly pay to absorb costs without raising revenue, a move debated by city leaders.

In Buenos Aires on June 21 the government structure remained intact after last week’s brief revolt. President Juan D. Peron carried on with official duties as rumors of a three or five man junta circulated without confirmation. Army Minister Lucero, now supreme commander, issued a communique saying normalcy was returning. Rumors of internal rifts persisted despite official calm and Peron’s aides indicated the administration was functioning as usual.
Washington June 21 A Senate House conference committee agreed to cut five years off the maximum age for inducting doctors and dentists under draft legislation. Doctors and dentists can now be taken into the armed services through age 40 instead of 45. The accord ends a deadlock over extension authority as Sen. Russell said senators yielded five years to gain House agreement.
Otis Morley recounted that his power mower rolled off his property and sped across a highway in Glen Burnie MD. A motorist nearly struck the mower and honked in typical driver anger, reflecting a frustrated roadside reaction to the runaway machine.
Mrs. Gertrude Crockett, 39, won an uncontested divorce from David Crockett in Detroit after testifying he deserted her two years earlier and beat her during a three month marriage in Weir. The judge asked if he was king of the wild frontier. she replied he was surely wild.
Mayor Copenhaver urged Charleston city council members to raise gross sales taxes to fund new public pools, saying bonds won’t sell and pay-as-you-go is unwise. He outlined a seven point plan for the next fiscal year, including pool construction, limited city employee raises, and improved street markings and lighting. The mayor also suggested city workers might face a 30 dollar a month pay cut and noted current tax revenue of 422 thousand dollars at a 30 cent per hundred rate, with potential to rise to 50 cents.
Gov. Marland will pitch West Virginia as a home for new industry by seeking plant sites, telling the State Industrial Development Committee that industrial diversification is vital amid coal-industry unemployment. He pledged close cooperation and outlined a major push to expand opportunities over the next 18 months. The Arthur D. London report states Ruth Ellis, 28, a divorcée and nightclub figure, was sentenced to death by hanging for the premeditated murder of her lover David Blakely, 25, outside a London tavern on Easter Sunday. Prosecutors rejected jealousy and provocation as defenses while a 12 jurors panel deliberated briefly.
