Supreme Court Upholds Baseball Antitrust Exemption
The Supreme Court by a 5-3 vote upheld baseballs antitrust exemption in a case brought by Curt Flood against the reserve system. Justice Blackmun noted the immunity is an aberration but said Congress must act to change it. Flood, who was traded from the Cardinals to the Phillies in 1969, argued the system limited players freedom. The decision preserves the owners control and the reserve method, with Justices Burger Stewart White Rehnquist concurring, while Marshall dissented in part.
