Postmasters Bill Defeated in House
Washington on June 19: after a bitter partisan fight the House defeated a bill to place first second and third class postmasters under civil service by a two thirds vote. The roll call showed 204 for passage and 184 against. The bill faced Republican opposition alleging it was a political move to purge incumbents. Farley resigned as Postmaster General during the debate but remains Democratic national chairman amid calls from Treadway to replace him.
