Truman Defends Housing Plan Against Critics
President Truman rebutted opponents of the housing bill, arguing the program would cost about 10 billion dollars rather than 20. He outlined slum clearance at 400 million, low rent housing funded federally but financed by private lenders, a 1.8 billion revolving loan fund, then dismissed other portions as excessive. He estimated rent costs at no more than 8,468 per unit and pressed for practical, limited federal aid to improve housing and relieve slums.
