Jury Fails to Agree in Brewer Murder Trial

The intermediate court jury in Drewry Brewer’s trial for the slaying of his common law wife Effie Calloway, 17, near Laing, failed to reach a verdict after three hours of deliberation. Brewer was remanded to the county jail as the case was sent back. The defense cited self defense and claimed the revolver was fired accidentally by Effie while playing with it. The Commerce Department closed its West Virginia field office and will shift inquiries to Cleveland, affecting local operations and staff.
