Americans Hidden by Pope in Vatican City During War
Two American airmen Sgt Broadniak of New Jersey and Sgt Bernard Scalisi of New Orleans were sheltered by Pope Pius XII in Vatican City with 17 allied prisoners before being released as the 5th Army entered Rome. They had been shot down near Viterbo three months earlier and evaded German guards to reach the Holy See. The group included 11 Britishmen, two Canadians, two Poles, one New Zealander and one Australian. Lt Paul Freyburg, son of a New Zealand general, was among them. Four of the Holy See prisoners secured exchange with Italian captives.
