Pruning Guidelines From WVU Expert T. D. Gray

T D Gray extension landscape architect at West Virginia University outlines pruning rules for next year. Remove dead or damaged wood first, then schedule tall shrubs on four to five year cycles. Each year cut out a fourth or fifth of older canes, cut within three eighths of an inch of a bud, and prune to prevent dead stubs. Summer pruning helps control size by removing terminal buds as growth reaches 18 to 24 inches, then again after ten inches of new growth.
