Bevin Objects to Jewish Immigration Plan at Labour Conference

British foreign secretary Ernest Bevin rejected the recommendation to admit 106000 Jews into Palestine this year as inadvisable for military and manpower reasons. He spoke bluntly at the Labour party conference, signaling Britain could act independently of the Soviet Union to speed European peace treaties. Bevin also opposed immediate immigration of 100000 Jews to Palestine, warning Britain would deploy another division if allowed. The conference endorsed his foreign policy, with several resolutions defeated.
