Monetary Stabilization Talks Hint at Early Steps

The article reports that a consensus favors avoiding a policy clash while pursuing currency stabilization. A 4 cent currency status is seen as a probable early point, with secret talks by officials from the New York Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and Bank of France suggesting a plan to limit questions until steps toward stabilization are agreed. France and other gold standard nations demand restoration of the dollar and sterling to gold at high levels, while Britons insist debts be settled first. Americans fear stabilization could depress domestic policies and hinder the administration’s program, though experts say some stabilization is needed before tariff adjustments and removing trade barriers due to price and currency uncertainties.
