Rep. Adam Clayton Powell refused to withdraw his anti segregation amendment blocking Eisenhower’s military reserve bill. He accused the President of being misinformed and misled by party leaders as he pressed for a plan to bar Federal Reserve troops from serving with segregated National Guard units. Vinson rejected a compromise and shelved the measure after Powell’s amendment passed.

City police were trying to determine yesterday if a South Charle.
Det. Lt. Dallas Blas identifies Melvin F. Withrow and George Fraser as two suspects who allegedly gained access to a locked van and took 180. The third suspect Homer D. Davis was also arrested on grand larceny charges. Davis appeared in Municipal Court for a hearing postponed to a later date.

Young testified he met with President Eisenhower and White House staff while denying government pressure. White claimed possible improper influence on the ICC. The Nieman Foundation mention and the unrelated note about a boy and a dog appear incidental to the main clash over railroad control.
Mayor J R Hardy of Glasgow says Tuesday's municipal election was conducted solely by local groups, with no state influence. Hardy’s Citizens Party defeated Independent candidate Bernard Bess by 241 to 62 votes, amid assertions of outside pressure and clarified that officials did not authorize state involvement.
Five month old Cheryl Lynne Appleman, born near Thanksgiving, may become a ward of the Kanawha County Department of Public Assistance after a petition was filed in Domestic Relations Court. Judge Herbert W. Richardson set July 5 for the hearing as the girl's parents Neal and Mrs. Appleman abandoned her after unpaid checks and vanished.
General Motors announced closures of 20 Chevrolet and Fisher Body plants nationwide due to parts shortages from sporadic strikes. About 60,000 hourly workers would be affected, with many sent home but expected back Monday as unions seek a new pact. The UAW strike deadline loomed, while Coast Guard and Ford plant actions also influenced production and talks continued in Detroit.
Hatmaker Harry Lev told Senate investigators he refused a $15 000 blackmail demand from his former girlfriend Mrs Mella Hart, a note to him in Yiddish showed their past relation. Lev testified two Army officers contradicted his claim about an extra hat shipment and profit on 1951 contracts.
