West Virginians Face Shifting Marriage and Birth Trends
The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company report shows 14,167 marriages in West Virginia in 1965, up 22 percent from 1964, while births fell to 31,968, a 16 percent drop. Nationally, 1965 weddings rose 4 percent to 1,796,000. The study links outmigration and aging to WV marriage lag and notes birth rates have declined since 1947 amid a long-term trend toward smaller families.
