Minesweepers Bring In Invasion Dead From Western Front
Survivors from the western Europe invasion arrive by minesweepers dubbed Smokey Joes as ambulances line the quay. A lone correspondent observes medical crews, guards, and a somber, orderly reception for brief troops who have seen too much. Officers coordinate with Allied navies while P-47s and twin-engined fighters guard the area and support the assault with strikes on bridges and batteries.

Doughboys of World War I Speak on Hero Tag
Kelly and Childers regret being hailed as No 1 heroes while overheard by PR officers and a newspaper man in a hotel room. They scorn such labels, fear for missing buddies in Italy, and note weight loss from hero attention. Both prefer to return with their original outfits, Kelly with the 36th Infantry Division and Childers with the 45th. They recall Cassino and Andino fighting and imagine northern France.
