Rail and Motor Lines Face Billion Pound Battle in Britain

Great Britain could see a colossal clash between railways and motorcoach services after the West commission proposes 386 million pounds for complete railway electrification over twenty years. The plan aims to win back passengers from motor services with faster, quieter trains and widespread electrification, totaling about 52 000 miles of track. It would save the railways millions in wages, repairs, fuel, and other costs while providing steady employment for thousands. The motor companies respond with consolidation and improved buses, predicting lower costs with diesel engine tests, while rail interests seek legislation to equalize fares.
