The American Office of the World Council of Churches reported interchurch aid and service to refugees totaled 46 million dollars in 1955, over four times the 10 million dollars given in 1950. The release is dated June 5 and notes the continued growth of church-based humanitarian effort.
John Carey Frothingham of Charleston West Virginia becomes the first West Virginian to win the Maxwell Scholarship to attend Virginia Military Institute. A Charleston High School senior the award pays 750 for the first year and 450 for each subsequent year at VMI. Established by the late Miss Mary Maxwell of Wheeling and Washington DC the scholarships go to West Virginia applicants with top College Board scores.
