An off duty New York policeman Vincent Flemming aged 44 was accused of a Brooklyn bar and grill hold up and shot a patron John Sheevin age 23 who died. Flemming was beaten by patrons after the slaying and a companion who fled with him is held. No money was taken.
The Aetna Finance Co opens at 145 Summers Street Charleston offering instant cash for all worthy residents. A Get Acquainted Offer promises 50 dollars for 30 days at a total cost of 1.75, with loans from 56 to 300 for auto refinancing and second mortgages. Local club and lodge notices follow, including a Dunbar fairgrounds picnic and Pythian Sisters meeting.
National Needlecraft Bureau sponsors and eight guests launch a three day sewing contest whirl at the Waldorf Astoria with a luncheon. Ethel H. Bennett of Belle, West Virginia wins original design honors. Contest drew 368 entries from eight divisions across 46 U.S. cities. Hosts include Alma Kitchell as emcee and Ray Bolger’s show at the Astor roof.
Lambros Alexis Pappathiantafilopoulos, a Boston University graduate, is known by friends as a reasonable fellow and answers to the nickname Pappas. The story notes the long name and his preferred short form.
In a downtown bar a man drew a gun and was beaten by two brothers who knocked the weapon from his grip. Other patrons joined the assault as two responding officers separated Flemming from the fray. The officers, noting Flemming’s 14 years on the police force, halted the attack and pulled him away.
Tampa police and Hillsborough County investigators probed the killing of Jimmy Lumia a Tampa gambling syndicate kingpin. A man in a passing car shot Lumia while he sat in his car talking with two employees at about 10 am. Lumia died minutes later at a hospital. Lumia was linked to Salvatore Italiano and Tampa vice operations, with Italiano reportedly in Italy. Both men were scheduled to testify in a murder conspiracy case against Sheriff Hugh Culbreath.
