Farmers Helped To Adjust Debts In Five-State Region

Settlements between farmers and creditors aided about 6089 farm families across five states, enabling them to stay on their farms. Debt adjustments often mean new repayment plans or longer leases rather than reduced amounts, with no cost to participants. Local committees of merchants, bankers, farmers, and FSA supervisors facilitate talks, without coercion, and only proceed if both sides consent. West Virginia records show 883 farmers reached settlements to date.
