Shores balks at gravel bill for polling place road
Kanawha County Commissioner Henry C Shores refused to approve a $100 bill from Coal Mine Construction Co for loading hauling and spreading gravel to a polling place road at Moose Hall Eskdale. The bill covers use of the site for the primary election and Shores questioned the amount while noting total site costs at $10 and awaiting other commissioners’ actions. Meanwhile a separate note shows three children Victor Valerie and Vincent George ages 10 9 and 12 holding 410 silver certificates they saved when such bills ended.

Smith Probes Two State Employes for Outside Work
Gov. Hulett Smith said he is investigating reports that two state employees drew salaries while working outside government. The cases involve John A. Cavacini of the Workmen’s Compensation Fund and Jack Owens, manager of a Williamson liquor store. Cavacini reportedly remodeled homes during state time, which Hanley denies, saying work occurred off duty. Owens allegedly served full time as a Mingo County election official while on state payroll. Smith plans action if findings confirm improper pay. He also noted a fire truck request and reports on William Griffith’s medical leave, and reaffirmed plans to bar further camping on the State Capitol lawn with rules to be issued.
