McCarthy Clings to Slim Lead in California Primary
In California's pivotal Democratic presidential primary, Eugene J. McCarthy held a fragile lead as results showed Kennedy gaining momentum. With 1,790 of 21,301 precincts counted, Kennedy trailed McCarthy by about 4,000 votes though polls suggested a Kennedy win with CBS projecting him ahead nationally. Kennedy would gain a major boost toward the nomination, while McCarthy noted California’s bloc-vote weakness in Southern California. Republican Ronald Reagan led the GOP ballot with all votes counted.
