Small Mines Safety Bill Faces Heavy Opposition in House

A bill to extend federal safety oversight to all coal mines, including those employing under 15 workers, drew strong opposition from coal operators and the United Mine Workers. Proponents say it would empower inspectors to shut down dangerous mines, while opponents warn it would close many small operations and hurt regional economy. The measure advanced in committee but was postponed for final action, with witnesses to be heard and a vote time set. Nearby, a Virginia woman receives a bachelor degree and a state police report tallies 184 highway fatalities year to date, up from 1145 last year.
