Final chapter in Valley shipbuilding era marked by idle Ward plant
The Charleston Gazette reports the closure of Charles Ward shipyard on Kanawha Street ending the region’s long idle shipbuilding industry. The plant, opened in 1872 and famed for boilers and boats like the James Rumsey and Greenbrier, shut in 1930 after a crash era and waning demand, while rivals at Point Pleasant continued limited production. The feature traces Ward family leadership, notable vessels, and early Kanawha boatbuilding history from colonial times to prewar years.
