Truman Defends Democracy As Antidote To Communism
President Truman argues the Mixon Mundt bill targets political activity rather than ideas, urging democracy and social welfare as safeguards against communism. He contends illegalizing communism fails to stop an idea and touts homes, health, education, and strong rights as true bulwarks, while criticizing Congress for price and policy failures. Labor Dispute Trials Highlight Taft-Hartley Rebuke
In a case under the Taft Hartley act, Robert N. Denham of the National Labor Relations Board accused Lewis of violating bargaining requirements. JudgeGoldsborough questioned the tactics, citing quotes about power while noting Lewis offered no evidence to show the Southern association opposes an agreement. The judge warned a broader aim to destroy union influence would be harmful, even as Lewis’s legal strategy remained unproven. Funeral notices reference John J. Lewis.
