Between January and June 1968 West Virginia paid out 2.7 million in free medical care to 85,895 people through 1,296 doctors 11 osteopaths and 353 pharmacies under Medicaid and Medicare amid national scrutiny. State officials say they are auditing payments and may publish breakdowns later, while warning of possible abuses and stressing need to maintain service access for the poor.
