Shanklin Moves To Cut Civic Center Board in Charleston
Charleston council Monday night introduced a mayoral ordinance to shrink the Civic Center board from 21 to 11 members and cut terms from seven to four years. The move accompanies approval of a $5,280 planning advance from the Housing and Home Finance Agency for a $6.0 million expansion, to be repaid only if the project proceeds. The council also okayed a low bid of 851,290 from Kenbill Construction for an incinerator plant at 1.1 million, with half financed by federal funds. Bishop Campbell voiced opposition to reducing the board, and a hearing was sought on the board size change. The mayor promised a future briefing on financing ideas.
