The House defeated the Townsend old age pension plan by 302 to 97 amid political threats before the 1940 elections. Dr Francis E Townsend watched the roll call as the plan for a $200 monthly pension for the aged was crushed.
On June 1 in Washington the West Virginia delegation split on the Townsend bill. Schiffler, a Republican, voted for the measure while Democrats Johnson Kee Randolph Smith opposed it. Edmiston did not list a vote.
The House rejected the Hen dricks Townsend bill by party line and cross party vote. Speaker Bankhead announced the defeat as Townsend aides carried him from the chamber. Rayburn and Dough ton led the strategy while Hendricks boasted party endorsements from 1938 and pledged future action on social security.
In Havana June 1 President Laredo Bru signed a decree forcing the German liner St. Louis to depart Cuban waters. Officials feared mutiny or mass suicide among 922 Jewish refugees aboard as Captain Wilhelm Schroeder warned of potential disorder if debarkation was denied. The Hamburg American Line said it would appeal to the courts while awaiting supplies.

New York June 1 AP Martin T Manton on the witness stand in a conspiracy trial denied taking bribes to influence U S circuit court bench decisions. He rejected accusations by the government and his co defendant William J Fallon claiming he acted improperly while asserting he loaned repaid 25 000 dollars from a Brooklyn bank.
