Rockefeller Learns Why Backus Deal Is Still Questioned
In 1878 Standard Oil bought parts of the Backus oil property from Mrs. Dodkus after talks led by Charles Marr and Peter Jennings. Rockefeller explains he advised fair value, offered help with transport, and says the sale was completed to Backus' satisfaction despite later unkind letters. He notes 30 years later no cruelty occurred and regrets not taking payment in Standard certificates.
