A Washington official said butter and cheese likely will be rationed next spring with cheese possibly treated as a meat substitute. Civilians now face scarce butter while plans adjust to March 1 for fruit and vegetable rationing and later meat and cheese controls.
A synthetic rubber plant at an institute is expected to make a test run this week possibly Wednesday or Thursday. If successful, steady production of the butadiene base for U S synthetic rubber will begin, with Rubber Reserve and other processors handling output as Ford Bacon Davis built the plant for Defense Plants. William Jeffers, head of the rubber program, is expected to arrive from Washington for the initial run amid earlier material delays now resolved.
In Eugene Oregon a woman Ensign Richard F James’s wife Martha Virginia Brinson James 21 was slain aboard the west coast limited train. A dark husky man described as a robber fled the berth after a scream around 4 30 a m. A $112 cash remained with the victim indicating robbery not motive. Pvt Harold R Wilson heard the scream and saw a brown suited man flee toward the rear of the car. Suspects held at Klamath Falls and in Tangent area as citizens and police search the route.
Tombon January 22 A Liberator bomber on maritime patrol repelled a six Junkers 88 dive bomber assault. One enemy aircraft was shot down and another damaged after a burst from the Liberator’s machine guns. The German force then disengaged, with at least one damaged while out of range.
Washington reports that a proposed constitutional amendment for equal rights for women may gain strong male backing. It would grant equal rights to men and women nationwide, challenging laws that limit jury service and grant husbands preferential rights. Critics warn it could threaten alimony and state rights.
