Mine rescue in South Africa traps workers after cave in

Rescue teams battled gas and aftershocks at a Witbank coal mine where four white miners escaped a northern cave in while Hungarian Lews Nagy joined the effort. Unclear Vanishings Tie Fultondale and Morris to Wages

Three men, Fultondale north of Birmingham and Brasher of Morris Alabama, vanished after leaving Brasher's mother's home. They left behind unpaid wages and unknown reasons. A 1947 model car was involved and no race has been established for the men.

First Polio Cases Found In Kanawha

Kanawha County reports its first polio cases for the state in the Jefferson District. Three distant cases, all boys, include one in serious condition admitted to Marmet Hospital. Seekford said none had received a polio vaccine and urged participation in dollar polio clinics.

Democratic Chief Rests in Hospital in Beckley

Democratic chief Nulett C. Smith was reported to be in Beckley Hospital for influenza testing and a physical checkup. He, a gubernatorial candidate, was admitted Thursday but attendants said he was not seriously ill and entered the hospital on his own.

Lectures on Astronomy at Morris Harvey College

A series of six astronomy lectures will be held at Morris Harvey College from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on alternate Thursdays starting Jan. 28.
